4SMARTS successfully held in Darmstadt for the third time! The symposium for smart structures and systems remains popular

With around 80 participants and 4 company exhibitors, the 4SMARTS conference took place in Darmstatt, Germany, with a panel of renowned experts. On 22 and 23 May 2019, everything revolved around the interdisciplinary topic of active, intelligent and adaptive or in short: smart structures and systems.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tobias Melz from the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability (LBF) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Wiedemann from the German Aerospace Center (DLR). (DLR), Institute for Composite Structures and Adaptronics, invited to this year's 4SMARTS.

With exciting and entertaining plenary lectures, the conference programme, which was focused on content and topics, was enriched. For example, Prof. Dr. Johann-Dietrich Wörner, Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA), spoke about the extent to which space travel and its research is a driver of innovation in the field of materials, structures and systems. The response of the participants to the lectures was also consistently positive, with strong participation in the discussion.

On the first evening, the Fraunhofer LBF did not miss the opportunity to present the institute and its fields of activity in a get-together format. One of its focal points is adaptronics, which was made comprehensible by means of exhibits.

A highlight of the conference was the presentation of the 4SMARTS Best Paper Award to papers submitted by persons under 30 years of age. These awards in the form of book vouchers were presented by the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability and by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tobias Melz, Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Wiedemann, German Aerospace Center. (DLR), Institute of Composite Structures and Adaptronics.
